'Mandopop' Star Stefanie Sun is Back

Singapore. Singer Stefanie Sun, probably Singapore's biggest Mandopop star with over 10 million copies of her albums sold, is back - again.

The home-grown singer is mounting a successful comeback after a four-year break.
Not every pop star can take a hiatus from her career and carry right on from where she left off.

But Sun, 32, had already managed the feat once. After taking a year off, she came roaring back with the best-selling Stefanie (2004), which won her the Best Female Vocalist at the prestigious Golden Melody Awards in 2005.

This time round, she is releasing her 11th record, It's Time, four years after her last album Against The Light (2007).
The early signs are encouraging as it debuted at No. 2 on the album charts in Taiwan and the first song being plugged, A Voice Within, is scaling the singles charts of radio stations here.
What made her decide that it was time to release another album? "I did feel that I missed singing. It has always been something that I love and I feel that when I sing, it makes me an artist. I feel that I can explore things when I have an album," she says.

She also felt that mentally, she was ready to do so. She adds: "In the past, some of my down moments were very public and it was a bit unnerving to always share these things with everybody and keep talking about them.
"When I think about the past now, it's no longer with a sigh. More like, yeah, there were some tough times but you get by and then you still do what you love again and not carry all that baggage with you."

The album was released by Capitol, which is owned by EMI. Sun is now signed to Wonderful Music, which is set up by Rock Mobile.
The most exciting thing about her album launch this time is that she sports a more feminine image and long hair, but even that is downplayed by Sun.
But she also says: "I don't want to limit other people. If they have a good idea, I do want to make it happen. I try my best to accommodate."
Sun says of making music: "It's a job that I'm suitable for. I take pride in it and really go for it when I do it."

It seems that the Nanyang Technological University graduate has found that balance for herself by being serious about music - and less so about the demands of the entertainment industry.
